Tiller

The last woodworking job I had to get done last week was the tiller. I shaped it out of a single piece of Black Locust, harvested up island some years ago.

Shaping the tiller with spoke shaves

The hole for the retaining cord was lined with a piece of 1/2" ID copper tube epoxied in before the side plates of 3/32" bronze plate were applied. Put one plate on at a time which allowed me to drill through using the copper tube to locate the hole.

Here is the 7/16" retaining cord for the tiller. Quick to remove and be able to take away the tiller to clear the cockpit.  The bronze plating was cut with a nice curve on the four sides around the tiller.
